Applications
Meranti, which comes from several tree species within the genus Shorea, offers a wide range of color variations. The heartwood varies widely from dark brown to light brown and from pale pink to pinkish red. The wide sapwood has a pink-gray color and forms a clear contrast with the heartwood. Quarter sawn wood can show a beautiful stripe pattern due to the light cross grain. Whitish lines may be visible on the wood surface, caused by tangentially arranged resin channels. However, these lines are not a problem for clear lacquer work, because they absorb the paint and become virtually invisible. Meranti does not have a resinous character like other woods, such as Keruing. Very small wormholes, also called Pin holes, occur but do not pose a risk of further damage in sawn and dried wood.
Meranti is ideally suited for both indoor and outdoor applications, including bodywork, carpentry, window frames, windows, doors, paneling, skirting boards, stairs, and much more. Meranti veneer is extensively used in the production of plywood.
