Oak wood in a nutshell
European Oak, also known as Quercus robur, is a wood species with a wide range of applications. The heartwood varies from yellow-brown to dark brown and forms a clear contrast with the light brown sapwood. When the wood is quarter sawn, it shows shiny “mirrors” caused by the wide rays. The ring-pore structure creates a characteristic flame pattern on the plain surface. The structure and quality of the wood can vary depending on growing conditions.
Oak contains a high level of tannins, which quickly corrode metals that come into contact with it. At Boogaerdt Hout we have an extensive range of oak wood in different sizes in stock. We also offer tailor-made solutions for construction timber. The workability of Oak is largely dependent on its bulk, but in general it is easy to work by machine or hand. The wood works moderately after it has reached the correct degree of dryness.
