Bangkirai is a collective name for the species Yellow Balau and Selangan Batu. Not to be confused with Red Balau which may not be traded as Bangkirai! When fresh, this type of wood is colored yellow to gray-brown, sometimes with a reddish tinge. In daylight it initially discolors quickly to dark brown. Bangkirai has a fine and even structure and usually a strong crosshair, which creates a clear stripe pattern on the radial or quarter plane.

Although Bangkirai is hard, it can be shortened, sawn and planed quite well. However, when planing quarter-sawn surfaces, you must take the crosshairs into account, which often leads to indentations. These indentations can roughen the surface and affect the finish. To improve the workability of Bangkirai, it is important to apply the correct techniques. For example, a good rake angle can help reduce indentations. By carefully choosing the rake angle, you can cut the wood fibers more efficiently and achieve a smoother surface. In addition, it is recommended to use sharp and high-quality tools when processing Bangkirai. Blunt tools can damage the wood and lead to more indentations. Regular sharpening and maintenance of your tools ensures optimal machinability.
