Afzelia is known for its excellent properties, with doussié being considered the best variant in practice. The different types are distinguished by their different colored ingredients. However, from an anatomical point of view, the different types are difficult to distinguish from each other. The properties of the wood may vary slightly depending on growing conditions. The heartwood has a dark yellow to reddish brown color, while the sapwood is pale yellow and has a width of 30-50 mm.

When processing dry Afzelia wood, good extraction is necessary due to the high dust development. Depending on the density, grain and contents, this type of wood is easy to difficult to work with, both by hand and by machine. With some types of saws, burning can occur during sawing. A cutting angle of 15° reduces the chance of indentation when planing, especially when crosshairs are present.
