An important aspect of the fire safety requirements is the required fire resistance between two fire compartments. The requirement is expressed in the minimum time in minutes that a fire needs to move to another fire compartment. This expansion can take place via fire penetration and/or fire spread. By making the right provisions, a facade can meet the requirements. The basic requirement for facade cladding is fire class D, in certain situations such as public buildings, buildings above 13 meters and escape routes, fire class B is a requirement. The Building Decree makes a distinction between new construction and existing construction. This distinction is important because fire propagation for new construction and existing construction is determined according to different standards: for new construction NEN-EN 13501-1 for existing construction NEN 6065. Another important requirement from the Building Decree is the (Euro) fire class. The fire class of a facade is related to how quickly it catches fire and how quickly the fire further develops. When determining the fire class of a facade construction, the entire structure in the end application (END-USE) must be considered. So the facade cladding, supporting structure and the insulation material. An example of a facade construction in an end-use application is the Forestlines® facade system.
When combining multiple materials, each of which individually meets fire class D, B or A, for example, the composite construction may not meet fire class B. The reason for this is that the fire behavior of the individual materials can negatively influence each other. It is therefore important that materials with fire class B or A have also been tested in the application (END-USE). To determine which requirements the facade must meet, a step-by-step plan is generally used in the various situations. Wood burns, but how it burns is relatively favorable. This is because of the heat insulating properties. But the Building Decree sets a basic requirement of fire class D for facade cladding.
